Why Lose Weight? My Journey To A Thinner Me

When I hear people talking about wanting or needing to lost weight, it's usually because they want to look better or because the number on the scale is higher than they think it should be. But what if you're a person who is comfortable with your size, even if you are 25 or 50 or even 100 pounds over your "ideal" body weight? I know people who are overweight who are happy with the way they look. They're beautiful, successful, and confident people. I think anyone with self-confidence looks good, no matter what their size! I, however, am not one of those people. I am very self-conscious and don't feel comfortable at the size I am now. I find it hard to talk with confidence to others about health and wellness when I'm overweight.

I don't like the number I see on the scale or the image I see in the mirror - I know I should be smaller. I want to lose weight to look and feel better. But, is there a reason to lose weight if the number on the scale or the size of your jeans doesn't bother you? Turns out there are a lot of reasons! As a nurse, I know that along with looking and feeling better, you and I will be much healthier when we're closer to our ideal body weight.

While wanting to look better and feel better about ourselves is a good reason to lose weight, the main reason to lose weight is for health. According to the American Heart Association, almost 112,000 people die each year due to causes related to obesity. Obesity is defined as having a body mass index (BMI) greater than 30. Diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, heart disease, and sleep apnea are just some of the health risks associated with being overweight. Compared to people at a healthy weight, people who are overweight or obese are more likely to die from all causes.

Losing just 10% of our body weight could help you and I reduce our risk of having some health problems that we would all like to avoid. Below are just a few of the benefits to our health that we could see by losing weight:
· Reduce your change of developing heart disease or having a stroke.
· Improve heart function, blood pressure, and cholesterol levels
· Reduce your chances of getting type 2 diabetes, or if you already have this disease, losing weight will help you control blood sugar levels.
· Reduce your risks of some types of cancer, including uterine, gallbladder, cervical, ovarian, breast, colon, and prostate cancer.
· Improve, or get rid of, sleep apnea.
· Reduce osteoarthritis.
· Get rid of gout.
· Eliminate gallbladder problems.

It makes me feel good to know that I have some control over whether or not I get some of these illnesses. It is said that up to 85% of all illness and disease is related to diet and lifestyle. Just knowing that losing weight could reduce my risk of developing some of the illnesses that my grandparents, uncles and aunts have died from is a huge incentive to continue on this weight loss journey. The same is true for you... heart disease, cancer, diabetes may "run in your family", but you have the power to take control of your health and break that chain! Diet and lifestyle trump genetics every time!

These are just a few of the reasons to lose some pounds. On those days when I feel like I'm not doing so well and have the "I've blown it anyway so why bother?" attitude, thinking about these benefits will definitely help to keep me motivated and moving forward! How about you - does any of this motivate you to keep going? Maybe you're just thinking about getting started... well, think no longer! Join me today on this journey to get thin, get fit, get healthy, and get happy!
