If you are an average person you probably managed to pack on
about seven pounds of fat from November to January. That is the average
amount of weight gained during the Holiday season, and has been dubbed
"The Seasonal Seven." Far less glamorous than "The Magnificent Seven",
most people are ready to get rid of that extra baggage ASAP. Which leads
to an influx of aspiring dieters and fitness buffs come January 1st!
This sounds fantastic and like we have nothing to worry about right? Well sadly most people don't even make it through the middle of January, let alone the whole year. This is due to many factors but one of the main culprits is looking at the coming year as a whole. To most people a whole year seems an eternity, so telling yourself you are going to go without sweets for an entire year is setting yourself up for failure. So without further adieu here are three tips that will let this year be the year you finally achieve your fitness goals!
Tip # 1 - Look at your goals in sections, not as a whole
As discussed earlier when looked at as a whole a year is a long time. The thing to do is break that goal up into "doable" segments. For example plan to cut out sweets for 6 days at a time, then on the seventh day eat the things you've been craving as a reward. This system works wonderfully because there is always an end to the hard work in sight. 6 days eating healthfully and the seventh to have all the things you've been missing! Your progress will be just as fast with this system and you won't feel deprived. It's a win-win situation!
Tip # 2 - Visualize the end result
Most people start the New Year with a basic idea of what they would like to do, but they don't visualize their exact goal. Visualization is very powerful and can be one of the best motivators you can ever have. Look in the mirror and imagine what you would like to look like. If you can see it in your minds eye you have a much better chance of getting there in real life. This will serve as fuel for the fire of motivation that must keep burning inside of you for you to reach your goals. Think about the way being overweight makes you feel, then think about how much better things will be when you are confident about the way you look. Feel the pain and see the reward. This will make everything you are going through worthwhile.
Tip # 3 - Don't burn out
Lastly, and perhaps the biggest reason that most New Year's Resolutions fail, is because of burn out.
If completely shift gears from last week's turkey dinner to rice cakes and water on January 1st, you are setting yourself up for failure. You are much more likely to succeed if you decide to set aside an hour to workout three times a week. 3 hours is plenty to get fantastic results and you will end up enjoying the exercise instead of seeing it as another full time job. Do the same thing with diet, first reduce your portions and eliminate junk foods, then work your way up from there. Remember you have a whole year to make this resolution a reality, so don't use up all your drive and motivation in two weeks!
So there you have it, three tips that will get you on the right track to realize your fitness goals this New Year. Remember this New Years Resolution thing is a marathon not a sprint. Conserve your energy and replace that hastiness with stick-tuitivness to make your goals a reality this time around.
Remember the tortoise that beat the hare in that race so long ago? Well that guy had the right idea. Consistency and the ability to keep going are how you are going to win this race. Best of luck to you all and have a happy New Year!
