Working in the fitness industry and in public I am constantly
teaching and educating clients and other gym members. Unfortunately a
lot of 'fitness facts' that come out of the gym are simply unsupported
theories that have been passed down from gym goer to gym goer. I call
these fitness myths and legends because usually is complete BS and
involves a huge guy of mythical proportions. A lot of these myths are
not a problem, things like the 20 sets per body part and the like simply
waste peoples time, but don't really cause many injuries.
In this article I will cover one of my favourite myths that is probably believed by almost every uneducated gym goer.
Today's Myth: Eating 6 meals per day will 'speed up' you metabolism.
This is complete and utter crock and I bet if you have been reading other sites today, you would have seen it written. Out of all the studies done on multiple meal eating the majority have shown no higher thermodynamic effect (heat generated from food being processed by the body) and no improvement in body composition ratio (ratio of body fat and lean tissue).

A lot of people find it hard to consistently eat 3 square meals a day let alone 5 or 6. Surely the creators of the diet plan you are spending your hard earned cash on know that increased meal frequency does not increase metabolism. I believe it's due to the other benefits of eating regularly. Benefits like:

- keeping blood sugar levels stable so you don't get energy crashes through the day
- reduce your hunger levels while on a calorie deficit
- meals or more frequent, reducing the urge to snack between meals
- allowing you smaller (easier to digest), more frequent protein serves during the day
